Staff officers of research assist members of the faculty in the conduct of research or a clinical program. They carry out assigned duties in the design of apparatus, the adaptation of relevant technology to the needs of a project, the conduct of specific experiments, and the analysis of data. They may also be responsible for collecting data. Staff officers of research are distinguished from technicians, who are members of the supporting staff, in that they work under only limited supervision on complex assignments that require them to exercise a high degree of initiative and independent judgment. They also generally have greater knowledge and experience in their discipline, which they use to design solutions to specific research or technical problems.
As a staff associate in Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, the incumbent will work to further the research in federally sponsored projects that are examining the role of distributed infrastructure systems in promoting urban sustainability. The immediate research area the incumbent will be responsible for involves green infrastructure for stormwater management, urban foods systems and neighborhood renewal. The incumbent is expected to assist with field-work, modeling and monitoring exercises and advancing innovative designs. The initial research will focus on New York City and Detroit as example urban areas with both common and disparate challenges.

Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor’s Degree
All applicants MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered for the position. A strong interdisciplinary technical background is required with experience in modeling green infrastructure performance and the use of GIS. Training in environmental engineering or science, urban design, architecture and or planning needed.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with research or design projects in New York City and Detroit preferred.
Additional Information: A staff associate is an officer holding a bachelor’s or higher degree who has had at least four years of professional experience in his or her field and who is appointed for a term, which is renewable, of up to twelve months for full or part-time service.
