Exclusion Netting Workshop and SWD Management Open House

Wednesday, September 2, 2015, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Berry growers and industry friends can plan to attend this valuable workshop on managing Spotted Wing Drosphila (SWD).  SWD research continues in our ongoing effort to better understand and control this new pest.

This meeting will focus on the second year of an SWD exclusion netting project;a SARE Farmer grant fund project, and its efficacy on eliminating SWD from blueberries and smaller crops.

In addition to SWD control with netting, we will look at a high tunnel raspberry planting that has three years of data on a fixed spray system used to control SWD.

Farm owner Dale Ila Riggs and the NYS Berry Growers Association have helped to secure research funding for SWD. The Berry Patch at Stonewall Hill Farm produces all kinds of berries and vegetables for local retail markets.

At this event you will learn and see…

  • How to do a simple salt flotation test for early detection of SWD larvae
  • Real time research results comparing commercial lures for early detection of SWD adults
  • Tour inside of Exclusion Netting trial (2nd year of results); modifications to netting attachment system in 2015
  • High tunnel raspberry planting with 3 years of data on a Fixed Spray System trial
  • What clean picking, sanitation, and immediate refrigeration accomplished despite infestation

Location:  The Berry Patch, 15589 NY Route 22, Stephentown, NY 12168 (Rensselaer County)  (Rain or Shine)
